Welcome to the Department of Medieval and Modern History at the D.A.V. Post Graduate College Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh. The Department of History was established in the D.A.V. Post Graduate College in 1957. Earlier, it was located in the main building but that time a separate Department was set up in the college for the study of Medieval and Modern History. Prof. Saumya Sengupta, Professor, is the Head of the Department.

Our standing faculty advance our understanding of the past and trains the next generation of scholars and teachers. We believe that the study of history is exciting, vibrant and vitally relevant to understanding the world in which we live, and the future we are creating. Through intense classroom contact, innovative teaching methods and extensive student research projects, we instill in our students human values, critical thinking skills and an appreciation for the complexities of issues that have been of perennial importance.

Today, the Department runs Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts and Ph.D. courses. A session and university pattern is followed at the M.A. level. In addition to the Department itself, there are many rare books and magazines and thus has a rich library for the purpose of research.

The main thrust area of the Department is Medieval, Modern and Western history. The key areas of research include Indian history, Freedom in the 19th Century and aspects of the social and economic history of India. In keeping with recent trends in history, areas of research have been expanded to include environmental, oral history, urban history, history of science and technology and diplomatic history.
